Yeah, I, um, almost hit someone with my car today.
Here's the deal: it was raining really hard today, and I'm on my way to school. There is this road that you can either keeping going straight on, or veer off to the right. I'm veering off to the right. Now, the veering takes place at a stop light. Those going straight might have to stop, but those veering always have a green light; we never have to stop.
So I am doing my veering with only a minimal amount of slowing down and then suddenly here's this lady power-walking across the street. I'm guessing she can't hear me over the rain, and she has her hood up so she can't see peripherally. I'm also guessing she didn't know the people turning right have a perennial green light.
Let me tell you...this woman must have a couple guardian angels because my car does not brake easily or quickly. My personal reaction time is MUCH quicker than my car's, so even with me hitting the brake, it's slow reaction time and the rain is still pushing it forward. Seriously, when I got my car to stop she could lean against it.
I guess she thought/realized the near-miss was partially her fault because she didn't stop to scream at me or anything, she just straightened herself out and kept walking.
Now, I wasn't going very fast; when I braked I didn't lurch forward so I wasn't driving crazy or anything. It was just very unnerving and upsetting all the same because I really could have hit this woman if I'd reacted a second later than I did. I drove down two more roads before it really sunk in and then I just literally thanked God that I'd stopped in time.
